Before we start building links to our site, we need to choose what keywords we want it to rank for. If you already have your website set up and chose your keywords and implemented your keywords into your content, you do not have a lot left to do. The next step is to go to google adwords keyword tool, and research all the best keywords for your website.

Once you have decided what keywords you want you can move on to the next step. Let us go and find out how many backlinks we will need to get our page ranked. The easiest way is to use google and alexa;

1. Go to google and search your keyword
2. Select the top 10 websites and search for them on alexa
3. See how much backlinks they have and what sites link to them

It is very important to know your competition, going in blindly will just end up in failure. You might notice that some website have more backlinks than the ones that outrank them, this is because of the quality of backlinks. This brings us to the question of Quality vs. Quantity. Any backlink can be a good backlink, the only thing is you might need 1000 PR0 backlinks to have the same effect as 100 PR3 backlinks. So if you can get a PR 2 or higher link, grab it as fast as you can!

One of the most important things about backlinks are the anchor text you use, always use the anchor text that you optimized your website for. The way to write your backlink is as follows: <a href=”your website here”>Your Anchor Text</a>. We need our website to rank for the keywords we want, not randomly for nothing.

Link building should be a constant exercise, if you start with 10 backlinks a day, keep going at that rate. In our project we need to build at least 600 backlinks so that will be around 20 backlinks a day, that will take about 2 hours a day if you do blog commenting. To help you keep track of your linkbuilding, keep a diary of all the sites you commented on. By doing this you can see what sites accept your comment and you can go back there.

In the next edition we will discuss all the different ways to build backlinks. For today I suggest searching for blogs that has the KeywordLuv plugin installed, to do this go to google and enter: “your keyword”"This site uses KeywordLuv”. This will return blogs that has the keyword installed, this site wants you to enter your keyword. To do this enter you name in the format; your name@your keyword, only your keyword will then link to your website.

So go out today and make valuable comments on at least 20 blogs. This will probably already get your website indexed by the search engines. Google searches blogs all the time for new information and new links. Once the blog owners accept your comment your are ready to go. Remember to always read the article that you are commenting on, this is the only way you can get comments that will be accepted.
